Lighting (one of the most important elements in interior design)

“Home is not a place, it’s a feeling” and creating the proper feeling in your home is so
important. You need to determine your own style and how you want your space to feel?
Designing can be so overwhelming and people often want to know exactly where to start
and what to do. With this blog I hope to help you think about and consider some important
points while you are planning your interiors.

“Light is the magical ingredient that makes or breaks a space; it’s one of the most important
elements in interior design”. There are seven elements of interior design to be carefully
thought about in trying to create an ideal home – from space, lines, shape, pattern, light,
colour and texture. Light is a key aspect, be it man-made or natural. Both natural and
artificial light can make a small room appear larger, can draw your attention to a certain
space and can help create a home, where you will find real comfort.

Light helps to enhance other elements in a space. The right lighting in homes can lift your
spirits, make you feel more relaxed and positive. It is the difference between a welcoming
home and an unfriendly one. Unfortunately, lighting is one aspect that is often overlooked
or not considered during the early stages of a build. Have you ever walked into a room and
felt it dull and dark? Have you ever found a space too bright and cold? The process of
creating the perfect home includes the seven elements working together.

You can light up all parts of your home in different ways. Here some home lighting tips to
help you light your home!
Consider your lighting preferences during the initial design phase of a new build or
renovation. For example, if you want three pendant lights over your kitchen island instead
of two, that should be taken into account before construction starts.

In the very early stages of our build, I came across this picture of three pendant lights that I
absolutely loved. As you all know, when building, you screenshot and save every single
image that catches your eye.

You can clearly see from my kitchen picture that I hunted down and sourced pendants very
similar to my original picture. I also went with strip lighting for under our corner cabinets
which is also a great way to create a cosy feel at night or brighten up an area if you are
prepping or cooking. We also went with downlights on our feature wall and in our hallway,
which offer a fantastic stylish finish. Opting for dimmable downlights can also give you
more control over your lighting setup. You can create the ambience of a room at any given
time.

Mirrors can also have a massive difference in the overall appearance of any room.
Positioning a mirror correctly can help bounce light and illuminate a space. When a mirror is
placed strategically, it can enhance the overall appearance. I find the mirrors in our hallway
bounce light around throughout the day.
Keeping in line with a contemporary finish, I went with two matching circular LED mirrors in
our kids bathroom. I love the elegant black rim and with the LED lighting I find it enhances
the natural light and gives the illusion of extra space in there.

I hope sharing some of our decisions and images will help you when you are considering the
seven elements of interior design. Just remember before choosing lighting in a room, it is
important to consider what you want to achieve in this space. Feel free to drop over to my
